Alocasia odorum (G.Lodd.) Spac
Family: AraceaeEnglish: Elephant Ear
Japanese: キリシマテンナンショウ [Kirishima Tennanshō]
Where I grew up we called these elegant garden plants Elephant Ears, and we were warned never to eat them. Apparently the cells contain oxalix acid, a microscopic, hook-like abrasive that can cause your throat to swell up so badly people are sometimes taken to the hospital...ugh! While it is fun to take shelter from the rain under the leaves, I have heard that too much handling can cause an unpleasant reaction.
