Asarum yakusimenseFamily: Aristolochiaceae
Japanese: ヤクシマアオイ (Yakushima aoi)
Although members of this genus are often called "wild ginger" because of the rhizome's aroma[a], some members are also known to contain aristolochic acids, which has been strongly linked to kidney failure [b,c]. This endemic species is said to grow at higher elevations than A. kumageanum, and the flowers have intricate rippled shapes.
