Rhaphiolepis indica (L.) Lindl. var. umbellata (Thunb.) H.Ohashi
Family: RosaceaeEnglish: Yeddo hawthorn [Wikipedia]
Japanese: シャリンバイ (車輪梅) [Sharinbai]
These large shrubs or small trees are abundant near the coasts and around the towns. They are often used in landscaping as low-maintenance wind-breaks. I don't know why, but my canine friend likes to eat the hard, black berries.
