Myriactis japonensis Koidz
Family: AsteraceaeJapanese: ヒメキクタビラコ (姫菊田平子) [Himekiku Tabirako]
I found my first of this endemic species only after living in Yakushima for five years. This one was right in the middle of the trail, but they are quite inconspicuous! The genus is restricted to Asia from the Himalayas to Japan and Southeast Asia and also to Central America. This species is restricted to Yakushima, and I fear that it may leave this world before I do. I have no explanation for its rarity, but if you come across it, please do not so much as touch it, which could attract the attention of deer.
