Illicium anisatum L.
Family: SchisandraceaeEnglish: Japanese Star Anise
Japanese: シキミ (樒) [Shikimi]
This small tree is highly poisonous if eaten. It's use in Buddhist funeral services may be linked to rhodents' aversion to it. Unfortunately, the seed pods resemble Chinese anise (I. verum), and—as evidenced by this 1881 publication [Eykman, J. The Botanical Relations of Illicium Religiosum, Sieb., Illicium Anisatum, Lour. The American Journal of Pharmacy, 1881, Vol 53 (August).]—has often been confused, sometimes with tragic consequences.
