Burmannia championiiFamily: Burmanniaceae
Japanese: ヒナノシャクジョウ (Hina no shakujou)
This is a small mycoheterotroph that pops up in damp, dim areas of the forest floor in late summer. I personally love plants that don't rely on photosynthesis -- something really mysterious about plants that aren't green. Thanks to Mitsuhashi-san for helping me learn to find these. In late July or August, the buds open one at a time, for only a few hours each, so if you spot one (in Shiratani Unsuikyo, or along the train tracks to Jomon Sugi or elsewhere) in bloom, congratulations!
